These results highlight the dual focus on robust data frameworks and supplier collaboration, reflecting the critical areas discussed throughout the webinar.
Key Insights and Strategies
1. Simplifying ESG Compliance with Digital Tools
The poll revealed that clear data collection frameworks and real-time monitoring tools are top priorities for procurement professionals. Rob Anthony emphasized that transitioning from manual processes like PDFs to digital platforms is essential to manage the growing complexity of regulatory requirements. At Kongsberg, the adoption of IntegrityNext has enabled streamlined supplier onboarding, comprehensive ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance) assessments and real-time risk management.
This approach aligns with the 23% of participants prioritizing advanced supplier mapping tools for improved supply chain visibility. By leveraging digital platforms, organizations can better manage compliance while reducing administrative burdens.
2. Strengthening Supplier Collaboration
With better supplier collaboration and transparency tying as the top need for ESG compliance (28%), both Rob and Mikael stressed the importance of engaging suppliers proactively. Kongsberg’s supplier engagement program includes self-assessments, training and awards to encourage sustainability leadership.
The focus on supplier collaboration is further underscored by the 18% of respondents in the second poll who identified improved supplier collaboration strategies as crucial for supply chain visibility. Rob highlighted that smaller suppliers, including SMEs, often require additional support to meet ESG expectations, reinforcing the importance of scalable and inclusive strategies.
3. Navigating the Regulatory Wave
Participants identified streamlined cross-border compliance processes and clear multi-tier reporting frameworks (23%) as essential for visibility in complex supply chains. Rob described the current landscape as a “wave” of overlapping regulations, such as the Norwegian Transparency Act and the CSRD. He emphasized the need for digital systems to manage compliance efficiently, especially given the growing number of multi-tier supply chain requirements.
For example, IntegrityNext’s platform includes tools for tracking compliance across multiple tiers, enabling businesses to address regulatory demands proactively. Mikael noted that future-focused tools like AI-powered multi-tier mapping will be vital for navigating this increasingly complex environment.
4. Aligning Organizational Resources
The polls highlighted the need for organizational alignment and resources (13%) and dedicated team resources for transparency (15%). Both speakers acknowledged that managing sustainability cannot be outsourced entirely. Instead, businesses must integrate ESG processes into their core operations.
Rob stressed that relying solely on external consultants for compliance will not create sustainable, long-term solutions. Building internal capabilities and investing in scalable tools are crucial steps toward achieving both compliance and genuine sustainability goals.
5. Long-Term Vision: Sustainability as Standard Practice
Looking ahead, both speakers shared a vision for the future of sustainability in supply chains. They hope that by 2035, practices like carbon accounting, lifecycle assessments (LCA) and multi-tier transparency will become as routine as ISO certifications are today.
The poll results—particularly the emphasis on clear reporting frameworks and monitoring tools—reflect this aspiration. Tools that integrate seamlessly into business operations, combined with proactive supplier engagement, are paving the way for a more sustainable and transparent future.
Final Reflections
The webinar concluded with a call to action: businesses must take responsibility for embedding sustainability into their operations. Rob emphasized the importance of starting small while maintaining a long-term vision, a sentiment echoed by Mikael, who highlighted the need for scalable solutions that evolve with regulatory and business demands.
As the session wrapped up, Anna Bjärkerud underscored the value of sharing experiences and learning from one another. The key takeaway? Building sustainable supply chains is a collective effort that requires collaboration, innovation and a commitment to progress.
This webinar provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of mastering supply chain sustainability, leaving attendees with actionable strategies to navigate an increasingly complex landscape.
