EBG | Play: Deploying supplier CSR monitoring across a global purchasing organization

What do you think are sourcing and procurement key focus areas today and going ahead? Risk management is probably in the top areas as are reducing cost. If you ask where CSR and sustainability come in – how do you think those aspects rate?

In a recent study made by Silf in Sweden, the number one priority stated by 320 respondents from both private and public sector was ethics and code of conduct towards suppliers.

How does CSR and sustainability come in as a vital aspect of your business development? Probably quite high on the agenda, with increasing transparency, increased global markets and increased possibilities to actually have some sort of control. Where in the organization does this role, if there is one, “sit”? It is argued that it should be one of the top level managers in a company.

How much of company revenue do you invest externally? Probably a lot and increasing. How well integrated is CSR and sustainability as part of your supply chain and supplier relationship management?

Webinar recording

Below you find a recorded webinar hosted by EBG | Network and presented by Terry Tilford, Group Procurement Excellence Manager at BDR Thermea and Andrew Dick, Program manager at EcoVadis. Terry share how they view CSR aspects in their supply chain, how they have chosen what suppliers to focus on, in what ways they onboard suppliers and how they have worked with internal buy in.

Polls

The attendees logging on to the session came mainly from the Nordics (59%) and the remaining from Europe apart from a couple of Asia attendees (!). Given the discussion about where in the organization this topic is driven from, it is interesting to see that 46% of the attendees had a “pure” sourcing and/or procurement related title, 29% a CSR, quality, sustainabilty type title with the remaining attendees titles vary from project manager to analyst to advisor. It will be interesting to follow the way CSR and sustainability within procurement and supply chain changes!

What are the top 2 priorities for your procurement/supply chain organization?

Well, not a question answered easily but still interesting! And no surprise cost reduction came in first followed by compliance. Risk reduction coming in as a strong number three followed by value creation and lastly sustainability and CSR. One might argue that increased risk and lack of control over CSR and sustainability aspects go hand in hand? Still, this is how different prioritized areas were valued.

What are you doing today and planning to do about evaluating risks in your supply chain?

As you can tell risk is here seen as a vital part of monitoring and developing CSR and sustainability within the supply chain. EcoVadis asked the same question during a previous webinar held in 2016 with a probably more international audience. The result there indicated that more companies (56%) had started or were planning to do more whereas 21% already had a program for monitoring suppliers CSR risk. Interestingly the same number 11% both said the area is not a priority as well as stating they were rewarding suppliers beyond risk management.

Are you using or planning to use any external tool to assess the CSR performance of your supply chain?

The final poll question aimed at investigating if external tools are used. Of course interesting for EcoVadis to know but also interesting to what extent external tools are used to stay on top of the huge amount of information needed to be CSR and sustainability compliant. It is evident that the strategies differ – where do you place your focus, how do you do the selection? Or can you do it all?
